How Effective Is IVF?
Of all the available methods, In Vitro Fertilization Pre-Embryo Transfer is the most effective fertility
procedure that can ensure pregnancy in women. Initially developed by Dr. Edwards and Dr. Steptoe, this technology
has seen many innovations and improvisations for the last three decades. Now officially available records suggest
that over 20,000 babies have been given birth by using this method. Sophisticated IVF procedures provide a
guaranteed one conception in about six IVF procedures.
However, to assume that it is easy to achieve pregnancy for any one patient simply can’t be predicted with 100%
accuracy; this is because the conception process depends on many factors and parameters like age of the patient,
the health of the reproductive system of both husband and wife. In its earlier avatar, IVF consisted of a minor
surgical intervention that needed the patient to spend some time in the medical facilities. But, with improvements
in ultrasound imaging techniques, surgery is no longer needed for most of IVF patients.
The basic difference between this advanced method and the earlier surgical procedure is the method that is used
to recover eggs from the uterus. The new method uses a sono-graphy guided needle to recover eggs from the ovary.
This modern technique is very simple to perform and the patient need not spend many days inside the medical
facility.
However to make the IVF procedure a big success, the patient will need to undergo some simple preparatory
activities. To increase chances of recovering good and viable eggs from the ovaries, the patient will need to
undergo an extensive hormone therapy with modern fertility drugs. Blood tests and ultra sound scans of the ovaries
are conducted to help determine the best time to retrieve the eggs from the ovary.
The actual procedure consists of subjecting the patient with local anesthesia which allows the examiner to
visualize the eggs with ultrasound equipment. Once the eggs are located within the ovary, a fine needle is inserted
inside the wall to suck the egg mass outside. The discomfort that is felt by the patient is very mild and patient
can go home and resume normal activities on the same day itself.
The extracted eggs are then preserved with care under optimal physiological conditions. The technician will then
place a fertile mass of sperms with the eggs to artificially conduct an external fertilization. The fertilized eggs
are maintained under hygienic conditions in a clean laboratory dish. The main idea is to simulate and mimic the
normal conditions that are seen in the fallopian tubes. Once the fertilized egg has divided itself into 6 cell
stage, it is transferred through the vagina and into the uterus. Once the procedure is completed, the patient may
need to spend some time in the clinic itself and later go home to carry on with normal activities. If you do not
see the desired result, you may like to repeat the process again during the next menstrual cycle. You may need
about three weeks of preparation to undergo this wonderful treatment.
A wonderful procedure that it is, IVF method works fine in a woman who is endowed with very fertile eggs that
are agile and active. The rate of success of conceiving a baby is about 15% and the degree of success depends on
factors like age, fertility level, physical condition, reproductive readiness and the viability of sperms.
