IUI - Intrauterine Insemination
Intrauterine insemination is one of the most famous fertility treatments that can ensure you a certain
conception and a guaranteed pregnancy. If you are unable to get conceived and pregnant, this is one of the best
solutions available to you. It is a very simple procedure and the whole process may take just a few minutes, making
it an ultra quick fertility method.
An IUI – intrauterine insemination- is a medical intervention that is performed by inserting a fine and thin
catheter directly into the cervix and then injecting fresh and washed mass of live sperms into the uterus. Before
inserting a catheter, your doctor will also insert a speculum and a tentaculum to hold the cervix in place.
Though this process is generally painless, you may experience some degree of discomfort while undergoing the
process.
To make this process a success, you must ensure that the sperm mass that is injected into the uterus is fresh
and vital. The sperms samples are collected in a sterile collection cup and most preferably, you may need to
collect and deliver the sperm samples within 30 minutes of ejaculation. If the clinic is far away, your spouse may
need to supply the sperm samples within the confines of the clinic. Occasionally, there might be a delay of a few
minutes when the sample is dropped off for washing and when it is inseminated into your uterus. This time lag can
be as long as 30 minutes to one hour, depending on the clinic’s facilities and schedules.
Most ideally, the whole process must be carried out within six hours of ovulation.
However, experts still believe that sperms must be injected before the actual ovulation process as they will be
waiting for the fertile egg to make conception a certainty. Some others advocate that a single IUI is better just
36 hours after post-hCG period. The success rate depends upon the viability of the eggs and sperms and the
reproductive capacity of the woman is undergoing the insemination. You may also need to undergo two successive IUI
to ensure better success. The overall success rate is pegged at around 30 % for a normal single cell gestation. The
overall success rate is also dependent on the viability and the potency of the sperm samples; washed sperms can
live for about 36 to 72 hours, but loose their viability very gradually with every passing hour.
Post insemination, you may need to lie down for about 30 minutes so that the sperm mass doesn’t come out of the
cervix. Once the insemination is finished, you may need to tale rest for a day or two, without indulging in heavy
exercises and jogging. To ensure better success rates, your physician may recommend you having sexual intercourse
soon after the IUI, just after 10 or 12 hours.
IUI is always carried out at a medical facility as your physician needs washed and cleaned sperms to prevent
infection in your uterus. You may need to undergo 2 or 3 IUI sessions to ensure better conception rate. Normally a
typical IUI procedure may cost you about $400, which includes washing sperms, ultra-sound tests and other
incidental expenses. The main side effects of undergoing the treatment are some minor degree of discomfort such as
cramping, or a localized and minor injury to the cervix that leads to bleeding or spotting, or even occurrences of
bacterial infection. However, with modern techniques and procedures, you may never face or experience acute levels
of discomfort.
